In 1792, Raleigh was created to be North Carolina's capital and named after Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh is home to the Native American Iroquoian, Siouan and Algoquian tribes, and North Carolina is one of the original 13 colonies. Our fine state was the first to officially call for independence with the Halifax Resolves in 1776.
